The powerful Knights Templar settled in the 3rd arrondissement in the 12th century, but today just a few street names remind us of that.  Envious of their wealth, Philip the Fair schemed to bring about their downfall and paid dearly for it.  The Temple district is also associated with Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette since they were kept prisoners in the Temple Tower, now destroyed.  Henri IV made the Marais the center of aristocratic Paris in the 17th century with the stunning Place Royale, now the Place des Vosges.  Until the court left for Versailles, it remained so with many sumptuous mansions and gardens.  However, their glorious exteriors do not tell us much about their colourful inhabitants nor reveal the intrigues that went on behind their walls.  Join us for this walk from the Temple to the Place des Vosges and learn more about the history of the area.

Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes. 

Those who wish may join the instructor after the tour for lunch.
