American Library in Paris: One Year Membership 2026-2027 (02 Nov 2026)

WICE members are eligible to become a member of the American Library in Paris for a reduced rate of 90 euros a year. Use of the Library begins upon:

Payment in full of the Library membership due of 90 euros.
Agreement to the Terms and Conditions of membership of the American Library as stated in their Library Agreement, to be signed in person at the American Library.
Issuance of a library card by the American Library.

Once your payment is received and verified, WICE will forward your name and contact information to the Library for fulfillment of the membership. You will be notified by the Library when your card is ready to be picked up.

The Library will not refund membership dues already paid to replace a membership in effect at a lower rate. When your current membership expires, you may renew at this lower rate.

The American Library in Paris, established in 1920, has a collection of over 100,000 items, composed primarily of works by American and English-language authors. It is located at 10, rue du Général Camou, 75007 Paris.

One of the best ways to learn photography is to visit exhibitions and photo shops. We will visit a contemporary photography exhibition in this great space for photography and analyze the work of the artists and the meaning of their work.

We will meet at Le Bal gallery at 2pm - nearest metro: Place de Clichy (L2 and L13). After the exhibition we will have a feedback session at a nearby a café.

About the exhibition:

To mark the bicentenary of the birth of photography, LE BAL is presenting, for the first time, an exhibition devoted to a single collection: that of Michael and Jane Wilson / The Wilson Centre for Photography. Through this rare ensemble of 120 prints, the exhibition explores the sometimes elusive, sometimes luminous, always shifting relationship between the one who photographs and the one who is photographed.

From fleeting encounters to carefully staged collaborations, from images caught in the moment to collaboratively constructed scenes, the exhibition examines the relationship that comes into being, at the moment the photograph is made, between the photographer and their subject. What does the image reveal about the respective positions of these two bodies? About their complicity, their face-to-face encounter, the silent pact sealed by the gaze of one upon the appearance of the other?

The exhibition brings together iconic works and lesser-known images, from the 1920s to the present day, in a sensitive journey shaped by visual echoes, affinities and unexpected correspondences between images.

Students can expect:

A guided tour of the exhibition
An analysis of the artists' work and how they use the photography medium.
A friendly feedback session after the exhibition

Pricing

Museum ticket price (€10) is not included in the course price. We will purchase tickets tickets on the day.

For insurance purposes, all attendees must be WICE members. We include a three-month WICE membership with the price for the general public.

About the instructor:

Juan Manuel Abellán is a professional fine art photographer and photography tutor based in Paris since 2007. He graduated in Advertising and Visual Arts and holds a Master in Art, philosophy and aesthetics, specialized in Photography and Contemporary Art. He has worked with the agency Magnum Photo and exhibited his work in several exhibitions, including at the Centre Georges Pompidou. Passionate about photography, Juan Manuel works as a freelance photographer with a specialization in portrait, reportage and fine art photography. He is also an experimented leader of photography adventure tours around the world.

About Michele: Michèle has recently returned to Paris for good after having stayed away for far too long. She has been a pet portrait artist, an illustrator, and a copy artist at the Louvre. Her favorite medium is soft pastels, and she especially enjoys sketching the world around her.

PN021 Creative Photography: Finding the Essence (16 Nov 2026)

This theme includes focusing on the essence and emotional impact of your subject and working with the art of minimalism in your compositions and lighting to ensure that what you experienced when you made your photo is felt by those who view it. It is about simplicity, precision, stillness, and mood—not so much what should be “in” the photo, but more about what should be removed.

We will do class exercises to learn how to really connect with your subjects and will review “assignments” in class to guide you on the path to the power of minimalism. We will finish with a presentation of your final project.

This virtual course will be held over three sessions giving you time to practise and hone your skills.

Session I: Monday 2 November

Session II: Monday 16 November

Session III: Monday 30 November

The price for all three sessions, held on Zoom will be included in the initial fee.

You will be automatically registered for all three sessions when you register for the first one.

The Zoom link will be sent in the 7-day and 1-day reminder emails.

Suitable both iPhones and cameras.

About the Instructor

Meredith Mullins is a popular photo instructor and fine-art photography mentor, an internationally exhibited photographer, and a winner of international photography competitions, including the Grand Concours Photo sur Paris, PX3 Competition, Julia Margaret Cameron Award, Photographer’s Forum, and Worldwide Gala Photo Awards. She is the author of the award-winning book In a Paris Moment, a leader of photo adventure tours, and the Co-Founder and Director of the International Fine Art Photography Competition.
